Hot Air Balloons, Ancient Churches & the Charm of Goreme

On our second day in Cappadocia, we woke up excited because it was the day of our much-awaited hot air balloon ride. We had booked our balloon ride with Discovery Balloons through our hotel months in advance. A minibus from the company picked us up at 4:30 a.m. and took us to a central meeting point, where a light breakfast was served. There were many other travelers there, all excited and waiting for the same adventure.

After some time, we were told that the balloons had not yet received permission to fly. We were disappointed, but we kept hoping for good news. We waited for about an hour and a half, and finally, the balloons were cleared to fly.

We headed to the launch site in the same minibus. By then, the sky was already bright. One by one, the hot air balloons began to rise. Watching the balloons slowly fill with hot air was fascinating. Soon, they lifted off and filled the sky with beautiful colors.
As our balloon slowly lifted off the ground, everything below us started to look smaller. The sky was peaceful, with only the occasional sound of the burner. Floating high above Cappadocia felt truly magical.

We were surrounded by colorful hot air balloons drifting across the morning sky. Looking down, we could see the fairy chimneys, valleys, vineyards, and unique rock formations stretching in every direction. Seeing Cappadocia from above was an unforgettable experience.
The balloon ride lasted for about an hour, and it was a truly magical experience. After the ride, we were dropped back at our hotel. We had breakfast, still carrying the quiet awe of the beautiful morning with us. Later in the afternoon, we took a nap to rest after the early start.

Around 4:00 p.m., we took a taxi to visit the Goreme Open Air Museum. Located in the heart of Cappadocia, this remarkable place is surrounded by fairy chimneys that rise like natural sculptures from the earth.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to a collection of rock-cut churches, monasteries, and chapels carved by early Christians who sought refuge here between the 4th and 13th centuries. Instead of building upward, they carved deep into the soft volcanic rock, creating entire sacred communities hidden within the landscape.
Exploring the museum was a fascinating experience. We wandered through ancient churches and monastic dwellings, some of which extend over two floors, showcasing the ingenuity of their builders. Inside, faded yet beautiful frescoes depict biblical scenes and offer a glimpse into the spiritual life of the early Christian communities that once lived here. Walking through these rock-hewn spaces felt like stepping back in time, with history etched into every wall. It was a peaceful, surreal, and deeply memorable visit that left a lasting impression on us.

After returning from the Goreme Open-Air Museum, we freshened up and headed out for dinner at Seten Anatolian Cuisine (Seten Restaurant), which is part of Sultan Cave Suites. Known for its refined Anatolian dishes and Michelin recognition.

The setting was the real highlight—warm lighting, stone architecture, and a peaceful view of Goreme village below, which slowly lit up as night fell over Cappadocia. Watching the scattered lights glow across the hillside created a truly magical atmosphere.

While the food itself was fairly simple, the overall experience was unforgettable. The combination of ambience, views, and quiet charm made it one of those evenings that felt special beyond the meal itself.
After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through Cappadocia’s downtown area. The streets were alive with charm—filled with shops selling Turkish carpets, Sultanite stone jewelry, handmade crafts, and beautifully glowing lanterns.

There were cozy cafés, lively bars, and inviting restaurants, all adding to the relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end the day—slow, beautiful, and full of charm.

It was another memorable day in Cappadocia, filled with breathtaking views, rich history, and peaceful moments that we will always cherish.

The next day, we visited a truly incredible place—something we never imagined could exist. You can read our unforgettable experience here
